Product Giveaway: LeapFrog Tag

I’ve been off schedule for days.  I normally post this at 9am.  I swear I’ll get myself back on track soon.

A while back I won a LeapFrog Tag Reading System from another blog, Mama Law.  I gave it to my four-year-old daughter, and she was in love with it immediately.  It came with one book (Ozzie and Mack, which was pre-loaded into the Tag) and we won another book of our choice.  My daughter chose a Little Mermaid book (she’s been obsessed with The Little Mermaid since we saw it on Broadway a couple of months ago).  It took just a few minutes to create a profile on the LeapFrog website, and then download the file for the other book to the Tag.

The way the Tag works is this: by touching different places on the books’ pages, your child can play games, have an entire page read out loud, or just get help with individual words that he or she is stuck on.  You can try out a very realistic Tag demo here.  The Tag library has twenty books with plans to add many more.  The system itself costs $50 and comes with one book, and then you can buy individual books for $14 each, including great titles like Olivia, The Cat in the Hat, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and Click Clack Moo.  Or, you can start out with different packages (Princess Pack, Ultimate Activity Pack, etc.) that include more than one book.  There are even activity cards, headphones, cases, and lots of other things that you can add on (I’m always a sucker for those).  The Tag itself is available in pink or green.

I gave Munchkin the Tag and the Little Mermaid book, showed her where the power and volume buttons were, and then showed her where on each page to touch so that the Tag would know what to “read”.  And that was it!  Within 10 minutes of my taking it out of the box, she was in a corner happily “reading” her book.  She loves books, and she wants to be able to read so much, but instead of getting frustrated she puts her books in a big pile and goes through them one by one, making up stories to go with the pictures.  She’s really good at it, and it’s entertaining to listen to, but I’m glad she now has the Tag to read to her whenever she wants.  I’m not one of those moms who will drop everything if she comes to me with a book.  I usually only read to her at bedtime, if then.  So I’m hoping that the repetition of the words while she looks at the page will help her better connect the sounds to the letters.

My son, who is seven, likes to play with it too.  He doesn’t need any help reading, but there are quizzes and games and lots of activities to keep him occupied.  I was so impressed with the Tag that I contacted LeapFrog and asked if I could have one to give away.  They went one better and invited me to an event in the city last week where there was a discussion with a couple of educators about the benefits of learning toys.  I walked out with some great stuff, including a Tag that I’m going to give away to one lucky reader!

In order to enter, please leave a comment with your favorite childhood book, or your child’s favorite book.  Maybe we can give the very nice people at LeapFrog some ideas for future titles!  Entries must be received by noon eastern on Wednesday, November 12th (I normally end these on Tuesdays but the 11th is a holiday, and I’m posting this late, so you’ve got an extra day to enter).  The winner will receive one green Tag reading system, including Ozzie and Mack.

Any comments received after noon eastern on November 12th will not count! The winner will be chosen at random by random.org.  Only mailing addresses in the U.S. and Canada are eligible.  Only one entry per person per day please.  I’ll say that again: you can answer once per day!  To see the full rules, please go here.

Good luck!

Oh! I hope that I can win this … I went to an event with Leapfrog for SV Mom’s and accidentally gave my Tag to another friend. I came home with a Sing Along Read Along instead (which I already have). I was so very disappointed and am dying to get a Tag for my 3 & 4 year old sons!!!! My favorite book as a small child was the Serendipity Books by Stephen Cosgrove. My boys’ favorite book varies on their mood. But Edwina the dinosaur who didn’t know she was extinct by Mo Williams has received a lot of air time.

I’m not entering — no kids that age in my life & there are others here who’d make better use of it — but I have to say that sounds pretty neat. It would be amazing if they could get the rights to Dr. Seuss books, which are terrific for reading out loud. (personal favorite — There’s a Wocket in My Pocket)

I’m dating myself, but these were old when I read them as a kid (I’m 45). They were the Betsy & Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. I LOVED them. They were written in the 40′s, & were set in the early 1900′s. I still have an original book, I’ll have to look @ the publication date. They were written in the 40′s. There were some black & white illustrations in them, & I colored them w/ colored pencils. I loved them so much, I even bought the rest of the series as an adult on Amazon. Now that I’m thinking of them, I’m going to have to pull them off the bookshelf & read them all. Thanks for bringing up such great memories!

I loved “Corduroy” as a child. My children like to read and look at the illustrations in “Mary Engelbreit’s Mother Goose” with me. My preschool age daughter enjoys reciting the nursery rhymes from memory. I hope LeapFrog plans to include a nursery rhyme book in their library of tag books.

My 5 year old was playing with the demo Tag at Walmart a few weeks back. She seemed to like it so I’d love to enter on her behalf for this draw. We’re big bookworms, and this would be just another fun way to make reading an even bigger part of our lives. One of my favorite books from when I was a kid is The Veleveteen Rabbit. My dad used to read it to me when I was little, and it will always be a favorite. I also really liked The Dangerous Journey which was a version of the Pilgrim’s Progress, and another my parents used to read to me when I was growing up.

    Thanks for the entry.
