Product Review: Joby Gorillapod
Jan 15, 2009 Product Review
I came across this really cool product, the Joby Gorillapod, while looking for something else. I can’t even remember what I was looking for, but a few google click diversions and I was on the Joby website. (In the interest of full disclosure, Joby gave me one of their very cool Zivio Boom bluetooth headsets last summer at BlogHer, but I found the Gorillapod on my own and paid for it with my own money. OK, my husband’s money. The point is, it wasn’t a freebie.)
I can’t tell you how many times this would have come in handy over the past year! I have a little metal camera tripod, and it was fine when I was using it to take pictures of something straight across a room, like a family portrait. But lately I’ve found myself needing to take a lot of pictures of things, small things, without flash, that are flat on a table or flat on the floor. Not easy to position it right with a regular tripod, and I’m often not steady enough in low light for a really crisp, detailed picture. I’ve also needed to take video of myself while reviewing things, and couldn’t get the camera into the right position with my metal tripod.
But the Gorillapod is designed to be used in weird places and on uneven surfaces. Watch the video:
You can also wrap it around things, and it holds very securely (sorry about the quality of the pictures, but my Casio camera is on the Gorillapod!):

It’s available in different colors and sizes, and there are some adapters available for using it with cell phones and other devices. Very cool. I’m going to be using this a lot.

So cool! Now I think I NEED it!
Well then, clearly someone needs to offer me a job on the Home Shopping Network!
Funny story: We were trying to get out the door today to go to the Liberty Science Center. I couldn’t find my camera. I looked everywhere. I was just about to give up, when I spotted it, on the black shelf in the last picture, where I had left it on the Gorillapod a couple of days ago when I did my review.
I picked one of these up (free) at BlogHer last year. They weren’t out all day long in the exhibit area, but I guess I was in the right place at the right time. It is pretty cool.
