Help me win $5,000 for a local food bank!

UPDATE: I’m within ten six of the lead!  Every picture counts! It’s OVER!  I need a drink.  Thanks to all of you, I’ll let you know how I did!

OK everybody, what I’m about to ask you to do is going to look complicated.  It is going to look like it will take a long time.  But I just did a test run, and it only took me about five minutes.

The economy is bad, people are hurting and hungry.  Quaker wants to help, and is giving a blogger $5,000 to give to the hunger charity of her choice.  I want that blogger to be me.  But there are 24 other bloggers out there whom I’m competing with for the $5,000 charity gift.

The way it works is this: each blogger gets a 24 hour period to get the most readers to complete a simple task.  My 24-hour period is today (Friday) from 10am until Saturday, 10am.  From what I’ve seen, nobody has gotten a ton of readers to complete the task at least one blogger has gotten several dozen people to complete this task, so every person who does this for me really really counts.  And remember, if you are a couple, and you each have your own Facebook account and email address, you’ll be helping me double if you each do your own!  Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Get a Facebook account (if you don’t already have one).  This is free and easy and looks like this:get-facebook-account
  2. Go to Start With Substance and press the big red button that says “Find us on Facebook.”
  3. On the Quaker Facebook page, log on to your Facebook account at the top of the page (if you’re not signed in already).  Near the top right of the page, click on “Become a Fan”.become-a-fan1
  4. Download the picture of the Quaker Man (the link is about halfway down the screen, on the right) and print it out.download-the-quaker-man
  5. Take a picture of yourself with the Quaker Man printout (don’t forget, you can use your cell phone camera!).  This part is important: you can’t alter the picture in any way – no drawing a mustache on the Quaker Man, nothing.  And the picture has to be taken in your home.  And you can’t be doing anything rude or lewd or icky.  Think wholesome family food company. (UPDATE: I’ve had some questions about whether or not a B&W printout of the Quaker Man is OK.  If all you have access to is a B&W printer, go for it – I can’t imagine that they would consider that “altering” the Quaker Man.)img00193
  6. Upload the picture of you with the Quaker Man to Quaker’s Facebook fan photos page.add-photos
  7. After you’ve uploaded your photo, click on “Back to Photos” and then click on your picture – it should appear bigger and be the only photo on the screen.  This is the page where you want to copy the link.  The link should look something like this (yours will be slightly different, so don’t use mine!): http://www.facebook.com/photo_search.php?oid=58028250774&view=user#/photo.php?pid=263613&op=1&o=user&view=user&subj=58028250774&aid=-1&oid=58028250774&id=1346744179
  8. Leave a comment on this post (my post, right here on Selfish Mom) linking back to your Quaker Facebook picture.  This is a very important step!  Just having your picture on the Quaker page doesn’t count – you have to link to it from my comments section.
  9. Congratulate yourself on getting that done so quickly and easily!  OK, OK, stop swearing.  The important thing is that you got it done.

Now for the fine print:

  • I’m supposed to provide you with the link to both the Quaker Facebook page and the official rules page, through the Start With Substance page.  I don’t know what this means.  I’ve already directed you to go to the Start With Substance page, but I’ll say it again: on the Start With Substance page, you can click on “Find us on Facebook” to get to the Facebook page, and you can click on “Start With Substance Terms And Conditions” to see the official rules.   But I’m also supposed to provide you with the links, which seems contradictory to going through the Start With Substance site, but I want to cover my butt: http://www.facebook.com/Quaker, http://startwithsubstance.com/terms.html
  • Quaker has provided me with two coupons, each good for $1.00 off any 2 Quaker Oats’ products to award to my readers (I’ll be giving them to the first two people who successfully upload their pictures and link from my site), and a case of oatmeal for my local food bank.
  • All submissions are subject to the Facebook Terms and Conditions
  • The Quaker Man logo must remain in intact and may not be modified in any manner. Readers must use the exact download of the image, and all entries need to be wholesome in nature. No nudity, defamation, obscene language or inappropriate, rude behavior in the photograph submitted will be accepted. Compliance with these rules is subject to the sole discretion of The Quaker Oats Company;
  • This program is taking place over 25 business days and the blogger who gets the most Reader submissions by 9 a.m. CST the following morning, (within 24 hours) will win the opportunity to select a hunger charity of their choice to receive a $5000.00 donation made to the charity by The Quaker Oats Company.

Phew!  OK people, it took me over two hours to get these instructions together in what I hope is a clear and comprehensible way.  So I’m begging you, I’m imploring you, to please take a few minutes and enter.  If you have any questions, I will be available from about 12 noon until late at night to talk you through it.  If you need to get on the phone with me just leave a comment or email me at owner@selfishmom.com, and I will email you my phone #.  If you live in Brooklyn and don’t have a digital camera (and you’re not a complete stranger) I will come to you and take your picture!  I want to win this!  I’ve done all I can, now I’m counting on all of you!

UPDATE: A few of your comments got caught by the wordpress spam filter, for reasons I don’t understand (unless some of you also use your email addresses to spam people regarding Cialis and Viagra).  So I’ll be checking the spam filter all day.  If your comment doesn’t show up and it’s been more than an hour, shoot me an email at owner@selfishmom.com and I’ll see what I can do.  Thanks to everyone who has completed this so far!  You guys rock!

I have a question already :) I don’t have a color printer handy…if the quaker man in my photo is black and white is that ok?

I’m going to assume that that’s a big old yes – I mean, the rules don’t even say that the picture you take has to be in color. I can’t imagine that they would consider printer in black and white to be altering the Quaker Man. Go for it!

I can see them both when I click on your links! Thanks guys! So for everyone else, Deirdre and Toni have done it right – they’ve got their pictures up on the Quaker Facebook page and have linked to them. Way to go! Wasn’t that easy?

    Hi Amy,

Here’s the link! Nice to hear from you and to see you’re doing well. All’s well here in New Orleans. Michael used to work for the Food Bank of New York City, so it’s a cause close to our hearts! Good luck and Happy Mardi Gras!
