Win a Lenovo U300s, just in time for Christmas!

UPDATE: I’d like to congratulate the winner, kim/reluctant renovator, comment #16! Thanks to all who entered.

I’m going to be making one of my readers very happy next week. Microsoft Windows and Lenovo are giving away the brand-new, just available today IdeaPad U300s, in a strikingly gorgeous tangerine color.

This is the computer that can boot up in as little as 10.5 seconds, and they proved it by dropping it from an airplane attached to a parachute that would only deploy once the computer successfully booted:

And if you’re tempted to call shenanigans or assume that they used some kind of digital trickery to simply make it look like they dropped it out of a plane:

Pretty cool, huh?

From the Lenovo website’s description of the U300s:

  • Slim, Ultrabook™ design for easy mobility, from just 0.6” thin
  • Minimalist, one-piece aluminum shell, available in Graphite Gray or Clementine Orange (coming soon)
  • Long battery life* with up to 30 days standby time
  • Lenovo RapidCharge brings battery charge to 50 percent in 30 minutes
  • Boot in as little as 10.5 seconds with RapidDrive SSD technology**
  • Breathable keyboard uses Intel® Advanced Cooling Technology to improve airflow so PC can run cooler on your lap
  • Cool-touch palmrest and intelligent glass touchpad with easy scroll, zoom and rotate functions
  • HD graphics and stereo speakers with SRS® Premium Surround Sound™
  • USB 3.0 port, HDMI output and 1.3M (720p HD) webcam
  • Intel® Wireless Display (WiDi): wirelessly stream content from your laptop onto a big screen (requires TV adapter)
  • BIOS-embedded anti-theft protection

This computer is light, super-thin, gorgeous, fast, and packed with features. I had the opportunity to keep it for myself and review it, or give it away, and the Christmas spirit smacked the sense right out of me.

So enter to win by leaving a comment on this post telling me what you would do with this computer if you won. Would you keep it? Would you give it away? Don’t worry – I’m not judging the entries. The winner will be chosen by So go ahead and be selfish if you want. :-)

  1. Amanda Sakovitz says

I would definitely keep this for myself. The computer I have now is really slow and makes loud noises.

  2. says

Oh I would keep it! I blog on a shoddy netbook with a broken space key. It sucks and is so tiny it gives me a headache. Clearly I am some sort of blog martyr. How I suffer…
But honestly we are just broke and can’t afford a laptop right now ap I really hope I win because that would be freaking awesome. Although I would lose my blog martyr status.

  3. Jessica says

I’d be a little selfish… I’d give away my current laptop and keep the new one because it has VT capabilities, whereas my current one does not. At least that way I wouldn’t have to go to the lab to complete my homework for various computer networking classes.

  4. says

I would keep it and never ever let the kids touch it. it would be MINE MINE MINE. Or, I would let one of the kids have it, because I would be wracked by guilt if I let them schlepp 17 pound back packs to school partly because of their leaden Dell laptops, when they could have this.
Ah, well, for a moment there, I had the dream!

  5. says

It would be so cool to win. I love IBM computers and it’s usually hard to find one sold for personal use. I’ve had my laptop for over 4 years and would love for nothing more than to upgrade. I. WANT. THAT. LENOVO!! HIT ME!!

  6. says

I would keep it for myself, but to prove that’s not an entirely selfish move, I’d give my 2010 to my kids. The poor things are stuck on a computer so old, they can barely play MineCraft. Yeah, I don’t pity them that much, either. But if I had a new laptop, I’d be more sympathetic to their cause.

  7. jenny says

I would totally be selfish and use this to replace my fried pos to do important things like tweet, facebook stalk and pinterest dream =)

  8. says

i would totally give it to my sister so we could skype and stay in better touch. she lives in durham, nc and her nephew misses her and the dogs terribly.. her current laptop is a hand me down 3 generations old and held together with paper clips..

  9. William Wong says

I would keep it for myself and replace my current laptop that gives me second degree burns after 15mins of use. Heard great things about the Lenovo u300s. HOPE I WIN.

  10. Jessica Piedra says

I would give it to my daughter who is going to college in Sept, 2012!! Best gift ever for her! Hope I win!!!

  11. says

I am a bit torn. I might keep it…and I might give it to our wonderful babysitter Holly who doesn’t have a computer. We’ve been shopping for cheap netbooks to give her one for Christmas. This would be so much better than that!

  12. beastrow says

It would be a present for my wife. Her laptop is dying a slow and steady death and we can’t afford a new one right now :(

  13. Kara says

Thank tou for having a give-away!
I would KEEP it. I spoil everyone else in my family all year long. Just had a 50th BDAY and it Sucked. After so many years of making everyone else’s special days and every day special my family did nothing for me. Not even a good present. They didn’t even make a RESERVATION at a restaurant. Nothing nada.
This was August. I am still not over it. (inside)
This would be my gift. Plus it is absolutely my favorite color on earth.

  14. Summer says

I’d definitely keep it…I desperately need a new computer! (but I bought my BF an IPAD for Chirstmas, so that’s good mojo right?)

  15. Shandi Alegre says

I actually think I would give this to my mom! Her computer just died and her computer was old anyways and that way she can skype with my kids! Great Christmas giveaway!

  16. Jason says

I’ve been an IBM laptop user for eight years and its time to upgrade to a Lenovo! Would definitely keep it for myself!

  17. Sara says

I would definitely keep it! My current laptop is literally falling apart. It’s missing keys and the lid is broken. I’d be so grateful if I won this!

  18. says

Oh I would so keep this, and give my old one to my daughter. She can sit there swearing when the buttons keep popping off!

  19. Svenja Sundermeier says

I would keep it and sell my old and incredibly slow netbook.
I only heard good things about Lenovo and since I travel quite a lot, the Ultrabook would come it so handy to keep up with all the work.

  20. says

WOW! I’d really LOVE to win this because the laptop I am typing to you on now, is over 3 yrs old and is barely hanging on lol

I hear Lenovo computers are awesome! Thanks so much for the chance to win! Happy Holidays!

  21. Paula Schuck says

Love it. I could use this BC my computer is too slow. So I would use it and keep it. It is fabulous! Fastest is best.

  22. Kelly LaChioma says

I nevver win anything ever but if i did i would ejoy it and try and teach my husband how to use it…he cant even use comp…im so behind in the times i would be so “in” and excited.i deserve it after emergency c section and my daughter and i almost dying (we are ok now)but i deserve some excitement and joy…this year has been the hardest ever..but so grateful i have my lil girl..what a miracle..really all i want for xmas is my family to spend time together..we never do y husband works 70 hours week…god how i miss the ssimple things like dinner, hugs, laughs…we will get it back..i never needed materialistic things to b happy..just would be a ice surprise!!!

  23. says

I would keep it for myself because my last three desktops and most recent laptop (all from the same manufacturer) died on me (not Lenovo of course!), I’m back on a dinosaur desktop, which doesn’t make blogging easy to say the least, but it’s a great lesson learned to avoid that manufacturer next time around! That skydiver is truly a brave soul, if my life depended on a computer booting up in under 11 seconds I know I’d be SOL ;)

  24. Carol Poulin says

I would use it to work online. I would actually be able to see the print on the screen. Right now I am using an iPod touch & it is difficult to read the print.

  25. says

I would definitely keep it since it’s tangerine, and give my current laptop to the kids. I miss my cherry red laptop. I have a Lenovo right now, and boy are they sturdy! So much better than my old Dell.

  26. Emily says

I would totally keep it, and my kids could finally have their own laptop! It’s be better than the cheap stuff they’re getting from Poor Claus this year….

  27. JR says

I’d keep it, 100%. I’ve owned a T400 for about three years now, and it’s beginning to show signs of student-abuse (won’t boot up without power cord, most DVD-roms aren’t recongized, both the mic and a USB port are broken). I’d then replace my Mom’s busted desktop with this warhorse, since her computer’s so much worse (…can you spell “can’t print” or “still is running IE6”?)

  28. BrooklynBeka says

I hate to say it but I’d probably keep it…I’m not sure but it would be so tempting! The Orange color is Hawt!

  29. Sara says

I was just about to start looking for another laptop or computer. So I’ll delay a week and keep my fingers crossed for tangerine (already named it).

  30. Rich K says

If I win this laptop I’m so keeping it for myself.

I’m British and living away from my family in Australia at the moment and my trusty Lenovo X60 is showing it’s age; I switched it on in the UK, still waiting for it to boot now I’m in Australia.

I’ll feel much better if I won the U300 so I could treat him like my son. I’ll tuck him in at night, clean his little orange head and even take him skydiving again in a few months time when I have some money!

All the above… plus I’d now be able to use the built-in-webcam my X60 doesn’t have to see my actual son every day :)

  31. says

Gosh! That’s crazy! I watched the video and I thought that its just bogus but its not. I guess it’s time for me to buy a new laptop. I would love to have the tangerine one since it would be the color for year 2012! I’m so excited. Thanks for posting! :)

  32. April Johnson says

I would keep it to myself and enjoy traveling with it and showing it off to my friends. Great looking PC

  33. tonyn84 says

I’d like to keep it for myself, but I think my sister is far overdue for a new laptop so this would probably help her a ton.

  34. Catalina B says

I would totally keep it. As a matter of fact I really need it!!! I’ll be teaching online in the next couple of months and I am desperate for a windows operating computer (I have an old Mac) OMG This would be totally awesome … I am therefore keeping my fingers crossed!

  35. jennifer says

I would love to win a laptop for an extra computer in my house for my in-the-womb twins to play on!

  36. says

I would keep it. I am in desperate need of a laptop so I can carry it around with me to work on my first novel at every moment possible :)

  37. says

We have been looking for a computer, a lap top specifically for awhile now. I even got some tech advice from you a few weeks back. I haven’t chosen one yet so this would be an awesome one to win.

  38. Norma Stanton says

I would keep it for myself and transfer my script writing progam onto it from my desktop, that sits on my dining table. I sit there for as long as I can with my annoying hip injury, as i type up scenes. I DREAM of the day that I can chill with my laptop, in my bed, typing my scenes out comfortably.

  39. Natasha Gordon-Chipembere says

I am a college professor, mom to a 10 year old and 6 year old and a wife… I would love to have this computer for my own writing and research – for those rare 30 minutes at a coffee shop where I can do some reading/writing before rushing to teach a class. My Dell is old and slow! Crossing my fingers during this holiday season. – thanks!

  40. Marie says

I would probably use it to get work done during my subway commute — when I could wrestle it out of the hands of my naughty naughty children.

  41. k says

I’d give it to my Brother who has four kids – all homeschooled! They could definitely use the help.

  42. Michelle Small says

I would keep for my household…I could really use this. Have nothing to access internet with that is mobile. Could get a lot accomplished on breaks and lunch time and save time for family when get home from work.

  43. says

I would completely trash the contraption on my desk now lol. My laptop pretty much provides power to all the external parts that are attached to it. Monitors, hard drives. Not that I’m a geek, but because coffee was spilled in the laptop. I have a feeling it will bite the dust pretty soon. Great giveaway and love the videos. Dropping from a plane? Crazy!

  44. bill persinger says

I would replace my old laptop and give the old one to someone less fortunate…in this time of giving….thanks.

  45. says

If I were to win the laptop, I would donate it to our after-school enrichment class. We have just won a $500 grant to explore our Ft Greene neighborhood, but our program needs a PC laptop for the children to use for research, create a website and a Powerpoint presentation!

  46. Sehralee says

Oh, I would give it to my best girlfriend. She deserves the whole world– but having a computer of her own to keep her business running and organize all the photos of her babies would be an amazing gift!

  47. noni says

I would definitely keep it for myself. I work from home sometimes and am in desperate need of a new laptop. Plus, orange is my favorite color!

  48. amybnyc says

I would so so value this! I am in the middle of my NOT FUNDED dissertation and my computer just died. This would be a Christmas miracle :)
All the best either way – I love your blog.

  49. Karima says

I’m a single mother of 7 and have not had a computer in 16 months, with the kids going back to school has made it very difficult at times to complete their assignments. The Internet also makes it easier for tracking my kids academic performance and staying in touch with there school communities. I am also in the conceptual phase of a skin care product line and I need to put some more time into research online. Having this opportunity will make some very big changes in my life!

  50. betsy says

I would give it to my niece so she can write her doctoral dissertation on it (her old computer just kicked the bucket).

    Aunt Betsy

  51. Sarah says

I would LOVE to have this even though pink is way cooler but would MAYBE give it to my cousin, who seems to have a pressing need for it. I’ll just have to keep using my cheap tiny little too small netbook that I share with my kids. Sometimes. Boo hoo! But it would still be Really Cool if I won!!! Yay! Merry Christmas! Thank you just for giving it away to someone. :)

  52. says

Keep it! My darling little monsters, um, children have made my laptop do funny things (like only charge when it wants to) so I would definitely keep it and hide it from them.

  53. Cindy says

I would keep it…I need and would LOVE a new laptop, and come on…it was dropped from a plane and still booted? It can withstand my 5 year old!

  54. Maureen Whelan says

I guess I’m a hybred…I think I’d keep it for myself but also make it available to people in my community for visiting with family and friends living near and far.

  55. Shannen says

If I was lucky enough to win I would give it to my husband who is working and living in another state. We would love to skype with him.

  56. Don Hende says

There is an unpublished book in my files called “The Art of Spiritual Surrender”. It was poorly written some 20 years ago. Now, at 70, there’s a chance it could see the light of day……with the proper technology.

  57. Christee says

Last night I wrapped my current Lenovo to give to my parents (along with a wireless router) for Christmas as a thank you for watching my 20-month old toddler every day so that I can go to work. Winning a new laptop would be awesome! I’d keep it myself since my parents are not very techy and wouldn’t take advantage of, or know what to do with all the bells and whistles!

  58. heather says

I would totally keep ithave to replace the computer that was stolen out of my car this summer. I take minutes, work from home, and homescchol – i NEED a cool computer :)

  59. Jenna says

I’d give it to my cousin whose computer was recently tragically destroyed. Maybe I’d keep it and give it to my daughter, who really wants a computer. No, I’d give it to my cousin. She really needs it. C’mon! Pick me!

  60. Amanda says

I’d give it to my mom – she just lost her job and is hunting for another one. Her computer is ancient and this would make a big difference to her!

  61. Ginny Millett says

I would so give it to my husband. I broke the power cord thingie on his current laptop. And his keyboard has had a mind if it’s own lately. Mostly because I love him. :)

  62. Dean Beacom says

I would first lend it to my sister to finest her dissertation then use it to edite family movies

  63. says

I’m a Mac girl, but I would keep it, because it’s orange, and orange is my favorite color. And I would use it in good health. :)

  64. tbc6374 says

I would give it to my son! He’s 13 and ready for his own computer! :) it’s a beautiful color!

  65. Megan M says

I would give it to my kids. Their current computer doesn’t recognize half of the number keys. This is especially convenient for math practice, but I’d like to remedy the situation ;)

  66. says

i would love the laptop so that when my darling sweet daughter demands to help me work i can allow her to use the old laptop to watch my little pony or bubble guppies and mommy can still get her work done… for me it would be a stress reliever better than a little pill…
