Why I’m scared to weigh myself before CES

[DietBet.com has given me the opportunity to participate in a blogger competition with the chance to win up to $5,000 for meeting a weight loss goal. The following post is part of my participation in the program. I am not a doctor, or a nutritionist, and following any advice I post is done at the reader's own risk.]

So I’ve been weighing myself every week to see how I’m doing on the whole weight loss thing, usually on a Sunday or Monday morning. I always do it the same way: I go to the bathroom, strip down to nothing, take any hairbands or jewelry off, exhale deeply, think light, floaty thoughts, and step on the scale. And I’ve been liking what I’ve been seeing. As of Wednesday– after four days of holiday-induced eating of whatever I wanted, mind you – I was down fifteen pounds.

I’ve been doing great since Wednesday, sticking to my plan completely and totally. I feel like I’ve lost a couple of pounds. But I’m afraid that if I see good results on the scale tomorrow morning, my stomach will convince my brain to go crazy in Las Vegas next week.

When I get to Vegas I’ll have roughly three weeks left to go in the DietBet.com blogger contest. I know how my thinking usually goes. I’ll try to talk myself into it this way: “So, you know, you did so great on week one that if you just try not to gain anything in Vegas, you’ll be fine – you’ll totally be able to lose the 7.7 pounds in the rest of the time. Have a little fun! It’s Vegas!”

Which would be really stupid. I need to lose two pounds a week to get safely over the 7.7 pound goal. If I didn’t lose anything in Vegas, I’d have to lose almost 2.6 pounds each of the other three weeks! And while that’s totally possible (I lost six pounds in the two weeks before Christmas), it’s not something I’m willing to risk cold hard cash on.

So, I need to stay on track in Las Vegas. I can’t just say “screw it” – as I am prone to doing – and count on making it up later. I. Can. Not.

But, I’m dying to know if I’ve lost anything this week. So I’ll probably weigh myself in the morning. Oy.

I’ve never been to Vegas, but all of those “all you can eat” buffets would be tempting!

Good luck! And if you decide to weigh yourself, I hope you get some awesome results. :)

@Angie Vinez: OK< so I did weigh myself this morning (I pretty much knew I would) and the news was great – three pounds gone! Now I just have to remind myself that this is a short contest, and not go off the rails next week in Vegas.

Okay you’re going to Vegas. And you’re doing something called DietBet…isn’t that good karma or something? I know you will be fine. Stay away from buffets and drink tons of water. This is your year to get healthy!

Hey Amy! Hope you have a great time out there! I’m sure you’ll do great and look forward to reading about it. Hope you have some time to stop by the Aquanox in the Venetian Hotel to check out the Lenovo space. Bummed I’m not going to be there this year, but say hi to my friends there if you make it! Have fun!

@Chau: I’ll totally try to make it over there, thanks so much for letting me know!
