My parents must be laughing

I almost forgot that I wrote this.  But here it is, over on the NYC Moms Blog:

Thanksgiving Dinner for Two-and-a-Quarter People

It is absolutely no surprise that Jake only eats about six different foods.  I remember being a huge pain in the ass about food when I was a kid.  This one specific time sticks out in my head where I went to lunch with my aunt, and I ordered cottage cheese, and they had the audacity to sprinkle paprika on top.  I scraped it off, but the very fact that the weird powder had touched my food was too much, and I wouldn’t eat it.  I told my aunt that it was too cold.  I remember her being way more patient with me than I would be with either of my kids.

Why the hell was I ordering cottage cheese for lunch anyway?

I need a vacation, not a trip!

I’m over on the NYC Moms Blog today, talking about how I’d like to do more travel with my family that doesn’t involve visiting other family.  The only problem is, I don’t want to achieve that by visiting my family less.  I think my husband just needs 12 weeks of paid vacation every year and a huge raise and then things will work out fine. :-)

But seriously, I’m far from the only person with this problem.  Most of the people I know in Brooklyn with kids don’t have family nearby.  My maternal great-grandparents, grandparents, and mom all grew up in Buffalo and lived there all of their lives (my mother keeps threatening to leave but I don’t believe her at this point).  I spent weekends at my grandmother’s house, it was just normal.  Now, seeing grandparents is a trip, a big production.  Hardly anybody stays where they grew up anymore.  I wonder if kids growing up without being close to multiple generations of their families is going to have some kind of impact later on.  I know it has a very serious impact on our babysitting budget.

I’m all over the place

I’ve mentioned my friend Jennie’s blog before, In Jennie’s Kitchen.   I love her no-nonsense approach to food and her zucchini parmesan hummus was totally yummy.  So I was thrilled when she asked me to guest-post on her blog last week.  And being me, I used it as an excuse to bitch about something.  Please stop over there and read it, and I promise I’ll be a good guest if you ever invite me over.

Veggie Tales

I’m also on the NYC Moms Blog today talking about how insane it is that some conservatives don’t want their kids to hear the president speak about staying in school and studying hard and being responsible.  Please stop by and get pissed at the insanity.  Or don’t, and tell me why.  Because as the article says, talking with people you disagree with is a good thing.  It makes me smarter.  And every once in a while it changes my mind.

I’m such a dork!

I always think, when I’m filming something, that I’m being smooth and suave.  And then I watch it back and I’m such a dork! :-)   But I love talking with Maria Bailey from BSM Media – a great PR person and my offline friend as well.  She filmed a bunch of blogger profiles last month in Chicago at BlogHer.  Thanks, Maria!

If you like seeing videos made by moms you should check out her video site, MomTV, which is where this video is posted.

UPDATE: I just found out that someone I know built the site that Maria mentions in the video, LaundryHE (I’ve done other videos for them too): Carrot Creative.  They’re very frequent and helpful tipsters on my other site.  Talk about a small world!

I’m in a new Yahoo video

A site that I write for, the NYC Moms Blog, has partnered with Yahoo to produce a video series, called “A Byte Out Of Life” and I’m in one of the first videos.  I’d tell you exactly where I was, but then you might not see all of the other fabulous moms in the video.

Basically, I’m trying to prepare my kids for the real world. If I thought that keeping them away from the internet 100% of the time would keep them safe, I’d do it. But I’m trying to raise my children, not just keep them in a nice safe bubble.  The internet isn’t going anywhere, and I want to feel secure that when they get out into the big bad world, they’ll be able to handle themselves.

Of course, that will all just be big talk if someone gross manages to contact them online, and I’ll probably become a Luddite for a little while.  But for now, I’m comfortable with the amount of time they spend online and where they go.  The problem is, I have no idea how long I should keep checking their browsing histories and only let them access the ‘net through the filter of parent-controlled software, but I know I’ve got years ahead of me still where I should still be doing all of that, so I’ll think about that another day.
