Four Blocks
May 14, 2010 What's Going On
I’m over on the NYC Moms Blog today, mouthing off about something that happened earlier this week. Jake wanted to ride his Shred Sled to school. I often let him ride his skateboard to school (the only reason not to let him is if I’m not going right home after drop-off, because I get stuck with the skateboard and helmet), so I had no problem with him switching to the Shred Sled. I was really proud of him when he learned how to ride that thing, because it seems like it shouldn’t be possible, but he’s pretty good on it. What he isn’t, though, is fast. I didn’t realize that it would take us twice as long to get to school, so by the time we were a block away I told him to give it to me so that he could run the rest of the way. He didn’t want to, and actually grabbed it back from me, and we wrestled with it for a few seconds before I regained my composure and threatened him with a big punishment.
When he wouldn’t hand over the Shred Sled I handed down the promised punishment: a day without TV, computer and video games. He handed it over then, and it should’ve ended there, except as we were crossing the street I told him that that was a really ugly way to start our morning, and he said “The only ugly thing here is your face.” OK, two days. “Yeah, well, you’re not the boss of me! You’re too stupid to be the boss of me” Wanna bet? Three days.
So frustrating. I wish he would just hurry up and realize that he’s not going to win.

Like (sloppy) mother, like (sloppy) daughter
Aug 22, 2009 Kids
I was so wrapped up in my own life this past week that I forgot I was posting over on the NYC Moms Blog on Thursday. I wrote that post a little over a week ago, and since I’ve decided to give in on the whole issue, car rides have been much more pleasant for both me and Fiona. It takes far less energy to vacuum out the car once a week than to be on her constantly for 45 minutes a day on the way home from camp. And she doesn’t get all stressed out from me badgering her.
It’s funny, when it comes to the kids I usually try to take a more work now/less work later approach – the child-rearing equivalent of that “teach a man to fish” saying. But you have to pick your battles. For whatever reason, Fiona just wasn’t getting this one. And the fact that she was getting stressed in trying was what made me realize I needed to give up. I’ll try again next summer.

Your safety or my reputation?
May 27, 2009 What's Going On
I haven’t had a chance to post today since my sweaty video this morning, but a new post of mine is up on the NYC Moms Blog (and yes, I did wrap my daughter in bubble wrap for the accompanying picuture – she’s a good sport). It’s about how the media – and online media in particular – is making me think twice before letting my kids do things that 30 years ago were just part of growing up, not only because I’m scared of the media backlash, but because I’m scared that the police will overreact due to their fear of a media backlash.
While I’m on the subject of the NYC Moms Blog, we’ve been nominated for best local blog on GoCityKids. So far we’re getting our asses kicked in the voting, but I know you can all help me change that! Please head over there and vote, and if you really love us, please Tweet this:

Mohamed at Subway, I’m calling you out
May 11, 2009 Around NYC
I’m over on the NYC Moms Blog today, bitching about the completely shitty treatment I got at Subway over the weekend. It feels good to embarrass someone publicly. Hmmm. Not sure this is a good color on me.
In this economy, Subway can’t afford to dis my kid
And yes, I’m aware that I misspelled “diss.” Spellcheck doesn’t work on slang. Go ahead, dis me for it.

Help out some public schools
Oct 5, 2008 What's Going On
Want to earn some karmic credit? DonorsChoose.org, which was created by a former NYC public school teacher, is hosting a competition between a bunch of blogs to see whose readers can raise the most money. A blog that I write for, the NYC Moms Blog, is participating, and frankly we’re sucking so far. But you can help turn that around!
Just go here and browse the participating donor requests on that page. Find one you like, and help fund it! You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that instead of your contribution going into some big pool of money somewhere, you will be directly funding a NYC public school project!
So please help the NYC Moms Blog team raise some money, help some NYC public school kids, and make yourself feel like you’re really doing something concrete to help some real kids and teachers.
