And the Blackjack Winner Is…

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

And the winner is…

Michael S!

He was entry number 71.  Before you count down and say “Hey, wait a minute, I was #71!” read further to see why six entries were disqualified (nobody was trying anything funny, some just didn’t count).

This was a hard contest for me to run, because people REALLY wanted this phone.  People begged and pleaded.  So many wanted to give it as a gift I knew I’d feel like a Grinch no matter who won.

Random.org picked the winner because I’m just too easily swayed and manipulated.  Here are some of my favorite entries (and remember, they had NO bearing on who won):

I just want it, and I want it NOW. (”Daddy I want a goose that lays a golden egg, and I want it NOW!”)

need phone !!!!. can’t breath!!!! no where to run!!!! can’t see the light!!!!!
Batteries running low!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am currently doing without a phone. this would be a lifesaver. i am disabled and my family worries about me and wants to check up on me more often, but we cant afford ANY frill right now. this would be a GODSEND [THIS is why I don't pick the winner myself! - Amy]

The QWERTY keyboard is the only thing that will give me a fighting chance to beat my teenage son at texting, so please, please, please let me win for once!!

And this one gets the award for originality:

When I was 9 years old I had a dream about GPS and I was like “where am I ?” “Where am I ?” And then I found out where I was. Oh yeah!!!!! Then I needed a keyboard when I was 32 years old and then music at 35yrs . At 36 I was committed to a special bluetooth 3G hospital. They told me that i had a a quad-band.Of course my family was called right away on their world phone which also had a camera which made it easy to take pictures of my GPS.
Now I know where it is and will never be lost again.
Please pick me so I can be whole again.
thank you.

Many people had broken phones, unreliable phones, old phones, phones that didn’t have the features they wanted…I really do wish I had 150 phones to give out.

Normally I’m pretty lackadaisical when I pick the winners.  I scan through the entries, count them out loud (I keep trying to enable comment numbering but I can’t seem to get the code right), and put the appropriate number in Random.org’s sequence generator.  I announce the winner and that’s that.  But I wanted to make sure and cross my I’s and dot my T’s so I printed out the entries, crossed off any daily duplicates and pingbacks, and numbered the remaining entries by hand.  During all of this I got two phone calls and a few emails that couldn’t wait.  And the stress of picking just one of you required an immediate application of salt and vinegar potato chips, so that delayed things further.  And of course I had to write this post.

I allow people I know and even people I’m related to to enter my contests.  Why not?  They’re my biggest supporters!  But I was worried that someone I know would win this contest, and I’d be accused of fixing the contest.  Rest assured, the phone was mine to do with what I wanted, no strings attached.  If I had wanted to give it to someone I could have.  I wouldn’t have had to go through a fake contest.

In the end I ended up with 143 eligible entries (there were 149 total, but six were removed for being duplicates, pingbacks, or my own).  Thanks to all who entered, and please stop back – I run a new contest every Thursday.  And thanks to the great people at Microsoft who gave me this wonderful phone in the first place!

My Samsung Blackjack 2 Smartphone giveaway is tearing me up inside. Normally with giveaways I feel like Oprah, getting to give things to people and feeling all warm and mushy. But the smartphone giveaway is making me dread actually having to pick a winner. The begging! The sad stories! Luckily, Random.org won’t be swayed by the contents of the comments, but I sure am. I wish I could give everyone a phone, but I can’t. I can, however, direct you here, where Kim from Hormone-colored Days has gathered up a bunch of current blog giveaways in one place. I just entered a bunch of good ones (hey, I don’t want to feel like Oprahall the time, I want to get stuff too!).

Also, while we’re on the subject of giving and getting, there’s less than a week left in the all-in-good-fun blog competition to see which city can raise the most money through DonorsChoose.org.  And frankly, NYC is getting its clock cleaned.  But it’s not too late to turn that around, and any amount will help out some NYC public school kids.  Five bucks is welcome!  Five!  And you can pick which project the money goes to.  Just go here and pick a project from that page to donate to.

It’s easy to think that if you only give a small amount to a charity, it’s just going into a big pool of money and not making a difference.  But in this case, you will be directly helping specific kids in specific schools with a specific project or item.  So please check it out!

Thanks you guys!

Product Giveaway: Samsung Blackjack II Smartphone

OK, this is a really exciting giveaway!  I went to a Microsoft event last week and left with a lot of great stuff, and I’m giving most of it to you guys (not all of it; look at the title of my blog).  The phone is white on the front and blue on the sides and back, and runs on the AT&T network. This looks like a fantastic phone:

  • Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 (you can view and edit Microsoft Office files and view PowerPoint files)
  • 3G UMTS/HSDPA, GPRS/EDGE (which I think means it can connect to the ‘net really fast)
  • Video Share capable (which means that this phone supports video calls, for an extra fee – how cool is that?)
  • AT&T Mobile Music and Video
  • Email and instant messaging
  • Bluetooth Wireless connectivity
  • 2.0 Megapixel integrated camera
  • Integrated GPS

It has an external microSD memory card slot, a full QWERTY keyboard, supports multiple email programs, and has all of the usual calendar and alarm functions and games.  It even has world-wide roaming capabilities for those of you with exciting lives.

Please note: it is up to you to figure out if this phone will work where you live, on your network, on your wireless plan, etc.  I take no responsibility!  I have enough trouble keeping all of my own gadgets in line.  To further protect my ass, I am not responsible for anything that happens to you while you’re using the phone, looking at the phone, or even in the same room as the phone.  Once the phone leaves my hands my responsibility is over.

I myself have a non-smart non-Windows phone, and I regret it.  I mean, I love my phone for the things it does do, but if I had to do it all over again I would only choose from phones that run Windows and that I can work on Microsoft Office files on.  My computer runs Windows Vista, I work on a lot of documents, and I realize now that I really need a phone that can work better with my other electronics.

This phone retails for anywhere from $330 with no contract commitment (how you’re getting it) to $80 with a two-year plan and the rebate that’s currently being offered by AT&T.  But one of you will win one for free!  To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post between now and noon eastern on Tuesday, October 28th.  Any comments received after noon eastern on October 28th will not count! In your comment, tell me what your favorite feature is on this phone (you can see more features here).

The winner will be chosen at random by random.org.  Only U.S. mailing addresses are eligible.  Only one entry per person per day please.  I’ll say that again: you can answer once per day!

Good luck, and thanks to the nice people at Microsoft!
